Critical Understanding Of Drama Productions

As my understanding of the film John Wick is very little to none essentially, I decided that it would be best to contribute some form of planning document by creating a floor plan for this scene from Doctor Who, and I quickly realised whilst I believe the tone is similar and the scene is simple with heavy dialogue emphasis, there are still over 15 angles used within this piece of work. Here is the floorboard that I made. I decided against animating it, however, due to the amount of times static cameras slightly adjust and change and the scene is around five minutes long. The red squares with triangles are the cameras and the green dots are the actors on screen.

The scene is a perfect metaphor for conflict and the damage that that causes in the real world. The angles used show opposition and struggles with close facial expressions which make for a very interesting and long dialogue scene. What I personally really like is the way in which we get to see movement happen from the characters with the camera movements, the static shots showing prominence and the shakier shots showing unease. Creating an off-balance for these characters.

This shot is blocked in a manner in which you can see darkness going into the light. The focal point is on the character of Kate Stewart who is struggling with this situation, contrasting between forgetting everything or starting a war between humans and Zygons. I like it, almost a spotlight over her head which extrudes that idea of her emotions being focal, in fact, she says nothing in this shot, it's all about the speech the Doctor is giving and the fightback that Bonnie is doing in retaliation.

I am also a big fan of the wide shot as it shows off the symmetry of violence and conflict in the form of a red and blue box. These contradictory colours allow for a clear indication to the audience that these colours are representing two sides of good and bad, being both sides and neither side at the same time. The way the camera is positioned actually is interesting, showing Bonnie's evil intentions as the dark lighting of gloom, but also being the most in-focus character gives it meaning. You then have Osgood in the background as the most central person, I believe her darkness is actually more about the worry in the Doctor, her idol is making her feel, a reflection of the dark path things have led and the shame of letting down The Doctor. Lastly, Peter Capaldi is in the light, giving him that angelic halo of good, however, he is far from the centre and is out of focus which shows that whilst what he is saying is right, nobody is truly listening.

Overall, the blocking within the Zygon Inversion War Speech Scene is a masterful example of how visual elements can enhance and reinforce the themes and emotions of a scene. By using movement, positioning, and camera work to highlight the conflict and resolution of the episode, the scene becomes a standout moment in the show's long history.
