News Package Analysis

I decided to analyse a news package based around cryptocurrency from the BBC, as that is not only the topic for which we are creating our package but also the company style we are trying to replicate. Whilst looking through this however I found that there were a few things they do that are pretty efficient in terms of their storytelling, but also there are psychological elements that allow the BBC to exceed as a world-leading news company.

Firstly there is the fact that the presenter is introducing a piece to the news package which is giving the audience an introductory perspective to the piece. Whilst we have not been asked to do this, it is interesting how this is done, segmenting the gap between the prior story and this one, it allows a surface-level story before a deeper delve into the intricacies of the stories that are being told.

I've realised that the opening line is key for your introduction, no matter the news piece in which you are telling; it is slightly different compared to a top line due to its nature of it, the top line is more of a summary of the story being told, compared to an opening line which is meant to bring intrigue to the audience. "Trading thousands of dollars over a ten-dollar meal" would be an amazing introduction for somebody potentially in the older range of 40+, it makes you wonder about the five W's instantly. Who is doing this? What allows you to do that? Where is this happening? When could you do this? Why is this allowed? This is something that is integrated into my script, and something that is also used in other mediums such as newspapers and YouTube videos.

This package contains interviews to divide out the story and get a more personable opinion on a subject. In this case they spoke to a young crypto investor, which will in turn cause an older audience to recognise the more modern and youthful nature of cryptocurrency, but also it allows for somebody informed on the matter to invest their time in helping other people. The way it is shot is always interesting, The way it is shot makes you feel like a fly on the wall joining in a conversation, I really like when it is done and how often it is done.

We see a screen recording of the screen as they bring up NFT's and their effects on the crypto world which can be shown with this B-Roll footage. That is what makes news unique, your B-roll footage, whilst obviously important, is a little bit less vital than it would be in a fictional format. They were talking about it across video games more broadly, which allowed for choice and innovation in terms of the things they wanted to show on screen. It also helps that the brighter colours of the game give that younger vibe to older audiences again.

I am a big fan of the piece to camera things that the presenter does here, it has action going on around her and it feels busy and rushed. It suits the news piece that is being created and allows for the business of the modern day world to be well conveyed by the younger people, the walk to the camera is slow and subtle and allows for a link in the story to be told here.
